El trabajo de Barceló ha tenido una gran influencia sobre sus colegas más jóvenes. En la década de 1981 viajó a través de Europa, Estados Unidos y Africa Occidenatl. En 1981 participó en la Bienal de Sao Paulo donde su trabajo muestra la influencia del Neo-expresionismo Alemán y el trans-varguardismo Italiano.
